Album: ONE BY ONE buy »
One by One by Jamie Shea and John Holmes (2009)
This one's all about "home." It was John and my first songwriting collaboration. At the time, the economy was crashing and people were losing their homes left and right. A friend's son had enlisted to go to Iraq and his father was so worried. Another friend's relationship had fallen apart due to stupid decisions. And we realized that at some points in life all anyone wants is to go home and sometimes that home is gone. — Jamie
LYRICS
Recruiter saying, "Join up, Roy.
Learn to be a man, you'll be employed,
The future is strong, you will grow,"
Now he's someplace he don't know,
The natives want to see him go,
And Roy, he just wants to go home,
One by one
Friend in a body bag
One by one
A rock thrown in the street
One by one
Dreams turn to bitter rage
One by one
A life's undone
Bobby wants to have his freedom now
Life is boring when you're settled down
He wants to be wild, he wants to roam
But when he leaves things start to change
The friends and parties all seem strange
And Bobby, he just wants to go home
One by one
Tears trickle from his eyes
One by one
You know the memories call
One by one
He learns what he gave up
One by one
Love's undone
They told them "Borrow all you can,
It's part of the American plan,
For happiness you must own."
Now someone's taken all the loot
Left without a parachute
The plug is pulled, they're losing their home
One by one
Lies become evident
One by one
You know the banks start to fall
One by one
We've got to change this game
One by one
The dream's undone
